After wandering in the jungles of Java for many years, when I set out for Sumatra with my faithful servant Hashim, I do not know why I began to feel a strange anxiety in my heart.
Arriving in Sumatra, I was assigned to the Pelumbang district. The area was covered with swampy plains and dense forests, and there was always a fragrant humidity in the air.
The area I came across was on the banks of the Melang River and spread over twenty square miles. The day I arrived here, groups of workers came to see me and I was surprised to see that their faces were swollen and black and they looked pale even with their shields. It was found that black fever and malaria were prevalent in the area and there was no doctor to treat the workers.
The trouble was that these people were so ignorant and savage that they did not follow the rules that were told to them to be safe from diseases. However, he saw that three or four people were dying every day due to epidemics.
As soon as the sun set, an army of large mosquitoes in the form of a dark cloud would come out of the river in search of food and fall on the unfortunate laborers. They had only one way to repel mosquitoes, and that was to light bonfires so that mosquitoes would not come near. But as soon as sleep overcame them and the fire subsided, they would cling to a man in their thousands, and when they opened their eyes in the morning, their faces and bodies would look swollen.
Although I had ordered the water to be boiled and drunk, the workers did not care. They drank water freely from rivers and creeks while mosquito eggs were floating on the surface of the water.
Short story Despite my best efforts, malaria continued to spread among the workers. What do i do
