In the early days of Pakistan’s film industry, Munawar Sultana became famous for her behind-the-scenes singing. Today is the singer’s birthday. Munawar Sultana died on June 7, 1995 in Lahore.
Born in Ludhiana in 1925, Munawar Sultana’s film career began with the pre-Pakistan film Minhadi.
Munawar Sultana studied music with Radio Pakistan’s famous musician Abdul Haq Qureshi alias Shami. Munawar Sultana’s films for which she has sung include Pheere, Mehbooba, Anokhi Dastan, Bekaar, Akeli, Novelli, Mehboob, Bedari, Masoom and Lakht Jagar.
This famous singer of her time is also remembered for her national anthems which include “Moon shining bright star and O Quaid-e-Azam your favor is favor”.
Munawar Sultana sang songs in Urdu and Punjabi which became very popular.
