Madhubala's love affair started with actor Prem Nath and lasted for 6 months and ended with the actress demanding to leave the religion. Prem Nath demanded Madhu Bala to convert to Hinduism, which the actress rejected. After which she gave her heart to actor Dilip Kumar.

The actress met Dilip Kumar on the sets of the film Tarana, the two worked together in the film Sangdal, Amar and Mughal Azam. Meanwhile, the actress turned to Dilip Kumar and this love affair continued for 9 years, the two also got engaged.

Meanwhile, rumors started circulating in the film world that media reports said that Madhubala's father was not happy with the marriage, but according to Madhur Behshan, his father never stopped Madhubala from marrying Kodlip Kumar.

According to Madhur Behshan, it seemed that Apa (Madhubala) and Bhai Jan (Dilip Kumar) were made for each other. He used to come to our house often. He was a very respectable person among us and used to call us Apa and Bhai. John used to go for walks together. They also used to go on long drives together.

Apa and Bhai Jan broke up during the shooting of the film New Era due to a court case. Madhu Bala and Dilip Kumar had signed on for BR Chopra's film 'Naya Door'. Ten days of indoor shooting had taken place and now the entire unit was ready for the Bhopal shooting. Madhubala's father Ataullah Khan has taken Rs 30,000 but refuses to send his daughter for outdoor shooting.

Ataullah said that BR Chopra was actually going to give Dilip a chance to have a romance with my daughter and that's it. Attaullah also flatly refused to return the money. Disappointed with Dilip Kumar and surrounded by the hardships of life, Madhu Bala married Kishore Kumar in 1960 to share her burden.
