PTA Extends Deadline for Mobile Phone Registration


Following the recommendations of the Senate Standing Committee, Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has extended the deadline for smartphone registration till January 25.

The Senate body on Informational Technology (IT) and Telecommunication had directed the IT Ministry and PTA to push the last date for the phone registration until the launch of the online phone registration portal.

A notification from PTA came in late hours of Tuesday which confirmed that unregistered IMEIs can now be registered with the regulator till January 25.

Committee Briefing

The committee met on Tuesday with Rubina Khalid in the chair. Representatives from the Ministry of IT, PTA and Member Custom briefed the committee about streamlining the process of collecting customs duty on cell phones upon arrival at all airports.

PTA officials informed the committee that their system for online mobile registration for overseas Pakistanis is yet to be completed and people have to visit customs offices for paying taxes/duty for registration of mobile devices until the launch of the web-based online registration system.

They assured the Senate that the system is likely to be launched by January 25.

The committee expressed annoyance and directed the regulator to first launch the system and tally its results before implementation of the policy.

The committee recommended for another extension until the online system is fully operational. Federal Minister for IT&T Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui assured the committee that the matter will be reconsidered.

Officials from the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) informed the committee that the Cabinet Division would be required to move a summary to the federal cabinet while seeking another extension in the deadline.
